July 03, 2025Former UMSON Alumni Association president receives the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) State Award for Outstanding Contributions in Maryland.
Carmel McComiskey, DNP '10, MS '96, CRNP, PPCNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN, former UMSON Alumni Association president, has been awarded the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) State Award for Outstanding Contributions in Maryland.
The award recognizes one person from each state who has made significant strides in advancing health care through practice, education, advocacy, research, and leadership, and has demonstrated efforts to advance the image, profile and visibility of nurse practitioners (NP).
McComiskey is a pediatric NP at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). She served as president of the UMSON Alumni Association from 2017 - 20 and played a key role in the founding of UMNursing, an academic-practice partnership between UMMC and UMSON, in 2007. She served as co-lead of UMNursing's Graduate Education and Practice core until this past March.
McComiskey received the AANP award during a ceremony at the AANP National Conference in San Diego on June 20 from Kristen Rawlett, PhD '14, FNP-BC, FAANP, CNE, associate professor (AANP State Liaison for Maryland); AANP President Stephen Ferrera, DNP; and AANP Region 3 Director Colleen Leners, DNP, FNP-BC, FAAN, FAANP.
The following UMSON alumni also received the State Award for Outstanding Contributions for their respective states:
- Desireé Clement, DNP, MS '03, BSN '01, APRN, CNM, FNP-BC, FACNM, FAANP, FAAN, associate professor, clinical track; assistant dean for clinical advancement; and midwifery specialty director at the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University (Georgia)
- Margaret Hammersla, PhD ’17, MS ’05, BSN ’95, ANP-BC, assistant professor, Montana State University, and former UMSON faculty member (Montana)
- Whitney Steinmetz, DNP, MS '13, FNP, RN, certified nurse practitioner, Presbyterian Healthcare Services (New Mexico)
