PhD student Yoonzie Chung and Associate Professor Dr. Roderick Rose recently published an article titled “Neighborhood Economic Characteristics and Child Maltreatment: A Systematic Review” in Journal of Family Violence. The current systematic review found that neighborhood economic characteristics were associated with child maltreatment. Caregivers in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods were exposed to potential child maltreatment risks. These findings suggest that reducing neighborhood poverty may be potential strategies to reduce child maltreatment. More evidence from further studies is necessary to solidify these conclusions. Specifically, this relationship would be better understood by exploring factors linking neighborhood economic characteristics and child maltreatment, such as social cohesion and informal social control, with longitudinal and nationally representative datasets.
