Dr. Darren Whitfield and colleague publish new article in Archives of Sexual Behavior.
Dr. Darren Whitfield, associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work, Dr. Tural Mammadli, a PhD graduate of the school, and colleagues published findings from an NIH-funded study of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) adherence among Black sexual minority men across the United States.
The study found that substance use was associated with lower PrEP adherence. Other psychosocial factors traditionally associated with adherence were not found to be significant. The findings suggest a need for interventions that assess substance use and provide support to help improve PrEP adherence and persistence among Black sexual minority men. Further research is also needed to understand how psychosocial and structural factors affect PrEP adherence and persistence in this population.
