Great Rhetoric Can Make for a Great Lecture: Geoffrey L. Greif Publishes in Journal of Teaching in Social Work
Geoffrey L. Greif of the University of Maryland School of Social Work has published a new article, "Great Rhetoric Can Make for a Great Lecture," in the Journal of Teaching in Social Work (Vol. 46, Issue 5, 2026, pp. 609–614).
In the piece, published online Oct. 8, 2026, Greif asks a question at the heart of social work education: when delivering a lecture, are we communicating to students as effectively as possible? Turning to the great rhetoricians — from Abraham Lincoln to Winston Churchill — he shows how the ancient tradition of rhetoric, with its attention to persuasion, emotion, language, and audience, can strengthen how social workers as both teachers and practitioners convey ideas, engage listeners, and influence others.
