Assistant professor and recent graduate publish article in Helen: The Journal of Human Exceptionality.
A new article co-authored by Rebecca N. Weston, EdD, MSN, RN, CNE, UMSON assistant professor; recent UMB graduate Simonne McCants, BSN '25; and community author and self-advocate Hannah Bentz, has been published in Helen: The Journal of Human Exceptionality.
The article, “Sharing Their Stories: A New Conversation with an Old Friend,” explores the power of guided, relationship-based conversations to deepen understanding of disability beyond traditional clinical education. The piece centers on a reflective interview conducted as part of the undergraduate course Exploring Disability in Health Care, in which McCants and Bentz engage in dialogue about lived experience, disability, and identity.
Through this narrative, the authors highlight the importance of listening, trust, and lived experience in shaping how future health care professionals understand inclusive, person-centered care. The publication reflects the School of Nursing’s commitment to disability-inclusive education, community partnership, and amplifying student and lived-experience voices through scholarship.
