The annual list, compiled by Stanford University and Elsevier, honors researchers whose published work has made a significant impact in their fields. Rankings are based on standardized citation metrics from Elsevier's Scopus database, which indexes peer-reviewed research, with scientists categorized across 20 scientific fields and 174 subfields.
The rankings draw on several indicators of scholarly influence, including total citations, the h-index, co-authorship-adjusted metrics, and a composite citation score. While the list itself captures the top 2% of scientists nationally, Barth ranks in the top half of that group by composite score — with more than 11,000 citations of his work since 1996.
