PhD Candidate Yoonzie Chung, Dr. Sarah Dababnah, Dr. Wendy Shaia, and faculty members from the School of Medicine and Tulane University published a new paper in Families in Society entitled “A research note on Black caregivers’ experiences while awaiting a developmental evaluation for their children during a global pandemic.”
This study amplifies the voices of Black caregivers of autistic children by highlighting both the challenges and strengths they experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, including financial hardship, disrupted services, concerns about their children’s development, strengthened family relationships, and a renewed focus on well-being. These findings underscore the need for equitable, culturally relevant developmental and family support services, including accessible care coordination, flexible service delivery, and caregiver mental health supports during both public health crises and routine practice.
