PhD candidate Yoonzie Chung, Dr. Haksoon Ahn, former postdoctoral fellow Dr. Jinyung Kim (Oklahoma University), and a colleague recently published an article in Aggression and Violent Behavior titled “Understanding Child Maltreatment Recurrence in Korea: A Scoping Review.”
The review synthesizes existing research on child maltreatment recurrence in Korea, examining how recurrence has been defined and measured, its prevalence, and the major risk and protective factors associated with repeated maltreatment.
Highlights:
• The average child maltreatment recurrence rate across the reviewed studies was 8.88%, while the average re-report rate was 10.83%.
• Key risk factors included physical abuse allegations, parental alcohol misuse, intimate partner violence, children’s behavioral and developmental difficulties, social isolation, and economic disadvantage.
• Protective factors included longer-term child welfare services, follow-up monitoring after case closure, comprehensive child protection support, and stable out-of-home placements when necessary.
• The review calls for a more child-centered definition of child maltreatment recurrence and stronger child protection policies to prevent repeated victimization.
