The American Association of Nurse Practitioners Health Policy Conference, held in Washington, D.C., Feb. 8 - 10, was chaired by Yvette Conyers, DNP, RN, FNP-C, CTN-B, CFCN, CFCS, CNE, FADLN, CWCN-AP, assistant professor and associate dean for strategic engagement and impact.
During the conference, Janet Selway, DNSc, MS ’88, AGNP-C, CPNP-PC, FAANP, associate professor and director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner specialty, led a delegation of Maryland nurse practitioners in meetings with the legislative aides of U.S. Sens. Angela Alsobrooks and Chris Van Hollen to discuss key federal policy priorities affecting the profession. The delegation included Conyers; Claire Bode, DNP '15, MS '10, CRNP, assistant professor; and DNP student Lisa Adams.
Following the Senate meetings, participants visited their respective congressmen, including Reps. Jamie Raskin, Kweisi Mfume, and John Olszewski. Across all visits, the delegation emphasized serious concerns about a proposed U.S. Department of Education rule that would remove nursing from the professional degree category and restrict federal student loan funding for nurses pursuing postbaccalaureate education.
