Veronica Amos, PhD, CRNA, PHCNS-BC, is the principal investigator on a nearly $42,000 continuation grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Services Resource Administration to support UMSON's Nurse Anesthetist Traineeship Program. This is the fourth year of the award cycle.

The primary aim of the traineeship program is to improve access to quality health care to medically underserved communities (MUC) by providing a diverse and culturally competent workforce of certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) through the financial support of the students in UMSON's Doctor of Nursing Practice Nurse Anesthesia specialty. This will be achieved by reducing the financial burden of the costs of tuition, books, fees, and reasonable living expenses for registered nurses enrolled full-time in Nurse Anesthesia specialty. These expanses can be overwhelming, especially when students in the program are not employed due to the high demand of classroom time and clinical requirements.

Additionally, the traineeship program contributes to the diversity of CRNAs and provides linkages with hospitals in Maryland serving minorities and the medically underserved for clinical anesthesia education. CRNAs are more likely to work in MUC; thus, this program is crucial to providing access to care for patients who need anesthesia services for diagnostic and surgical procedures, especially among underserved populations in Maryland.
