Roger J. Ward, EdD, JD, MSL, MPA, provost, executive vice president, and dean of the Graduate School, will lead a conversation on How Race Plays a Role in College Admissions. Affirmative action in admissions has been considered many times over recent years. In a Washington Post-Schar School poll from October 2022, more than six out of 10 Americans say they favor leaving race out of college admissions. Some contend that using race in admissions is not the only way colleges can diversify their incoming classes, but others reason that programs should be made available with the intent of boosting racial and ethnic diversity among students. According to The Washington Post story about the poll results: “Americans appear torn over policies meant to remedy historical inequities in educational opportunity and uphold the principle that students learn through encounters with classmates who don’t look like them. … The findings illuminate the turbulent crosscurrents of public opinion on affirmative action as the Supreme Court revisits the fraught subject” in legal cases involving Harvard University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
