This July, step away from single-use plastics. The Office of Sustainability encourages you to visit our social media pages this month for tips on participating in the Plastic Free July Challenge.

Plastic Free July is a monthlong challenge that helps millions of people across the globe become change makers in reducing plastic consumption and pollution. The idea for Plastic Free July originated from a small group in Western Australia and has continued to grow since 2011. The theme for Plastic Free July 2023 is: Small steps, big difference. The collective power of individuals ditching single-use plastics is an effective step toward systemic changes that will benefit our environment. The Plastic Free Foundation provides numerous ideas for how participants can make small changes to reduce their everyday single-use plastic waste. In 2022, it is estimated that Plastic Free July participants globally reduced:

  • Landfill waste by 1.7 million tons
  • Recyclable waste by 0.9 million tons
  • Plastic consumption by 0.3 million tons

July also marks the beginning of a new specialty recycling collection for plastic film and bags at UMB. From July 1, 2023-Jan. 1, 2024, the Office of Sustainability aims to collect 500 pounds of soft plastics from across campus. Upon achieving this goal, UMB will receive a donated composite bench from Trex

Trex Plastic Film Drop-Off Locations:

  • Medical School Teaching Facility (Biomedical Research Supply Core — BIORESCO)
  • SMC Campus Center (Lobby)
  • Lexington Building (Lobby)

There are so many opportunities this month to ditch that plastic! Throughout the month, check out the UMB Office of Sustainability’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages for our tips on participating in the Plastic Free July Challenge. This July, step away from single-use plastics and toward a healthier future for you and the environment!
