Thomas Leone

Dear UMB Community,

Following a national search, I am delighted to announce that UMB Police Chief Thomas Leone has been promoted to assistant vice president (AVP) of public safety and chief of police beginning Jan. 1, 2023. The UMB Office of the Fire Marshal, led by Andrew Roberts, also joined the Department of Public Safety effective Dec. 20.

Since being named chief in 2021, Tom has pioneered new initiatives, including an innovative partnership with the School of Social Work, returning citizens, and community organizations. He has increased the department’s robust training program; championed diversity, equity, and inclusion; and used data-driven strategies to keep crime low at UMB. Tom embodies the core value set of Respect and Integrity and consistently works to change the UMB Police Department (UMBPD) for the better.

I am confident that, in his new role, Tom will continue to build upon the foundation of service excellence within the UMBPD. Please join me in congratulating AVP Leone on this accomplishment.

Sincerely,

Dawn M. Rhodes, DBA
Chief Business and Finance Officer and Senior Vice President
