The UMB Office of Sustainability invites all members of the UMB community to celebrate Earth Day, celebrated annually April 22, by participating in sustainability events and initiatives throughout the month of April.

The Earth Month 2024 webpage will be updated as more information becomes available and additional events are added. We look forward to seeing you in April!

Specialty Recycling Collection Event at the Campus Center and Lexington Building

Monday, April 1-Tuesday, April 30

Recycle books, alkaline batteries, ink/toner cartridges, electronics, and plastic bags and film in designated bins in the lobbies of the SMC Campus Center and Lexington Building, 620 W. Lexington St.

  • Alkaline Batteries: AAA, AA, C, D, 9-Volt
  • Electronics: computers, laptops, servers, monitors, printers, keyboards, mice, switches, routers, wire, cellphones, tablets, communication equipment
  • Books: hardcover and softcover
  • Toner/Ink Cartridges: laser and inkjet printer cartridges
  • Plastic Bags and Film: shopping bags, produce bags, Ziploc bags, bread bags, cereal bags, bubble wrap, plastic overwrap, air pillows

ECO-Fest

Friday, April 12, Noon-3 p.m.

Join ECO for the second annual ECO-Fest, its spring annual Earth Day celebration, outside of HSRFIII. This event’s purpose is to connect and engage students in environmental opportunities and sustainable actions. This event aims to generate greater visibility to the interconnections among the climate crisis, our personal lives, and our aspiring professions. Co-sponsored by the University Student Government Association.

For the plant/book/clothing swaps, please feel free to bring any of the following gently used items you'd like to get rid of (any items leftover will be donated post-event):

  • Plant supplies, cuttings, pots, etc.
  • Books of any kind
  • Clothing of any kind (please no undergarments)

Preregistration is not required but preferred. Anyone preregistered by April 5 will be entered into a drawing for a B. Willow Plant Care gift bag. Register here for the April 12 event.

Bike Tune-Ups with Joe’s Bike Shop

Wednesday, April 17, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Come to the School of Nursing Courtyard for a free bike tune-up courtesy of Joe’s Bike Shop. Approximately 30 bikes will receive tune-ups; bikes will be accepted until 1:30 p.m. or the limit is reached. This event is sponsored by GreenSON.

Earth Day 5K with URecFit and Wellness

Thursday, April 18, Noon-1 p.m.

All 5Ks begin at the SMC Campus Center at 621 W. Lombard St. at noon. Runs are free for everyone! The theme is Earthy Attire. Register here for the April 18 event.

The Effects of Climate Change on Global Health — Implications for Maryland 

Wednesday, April 24, 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m.

Join our panel to learn about the latest scientific research on climate change and its impact on global health. Attendees will gain valuable insights into challenges facing Maryland and potential solutions. Breakfast is included. This event will take place on the HSRFIII ground floor, in the Symposium Room (CR1010). This event is co-hosted by the School of Medicine’s Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health and the Office of Sustainability. Register here for the April 24 event.
