Clean indoor act sign

Have you seen “No Smoking or Vaping” signs popping up in the entrance windows of University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) buildings? These newly installed signs help UMB comply with recently passed legislation in the state of Maryland.

First passed in 2007, the Clean Indoor Air Act originally prohibited smoking in public indoor spaces to “preserve and improve the health, comfort, and environment of the people of Maryland by limiting exposure to environmental smoke.” Legislation passed during Maryland’s 2024 legislative session adds vaping to the original act. According to Maryland’s Department of Health, the smoking or vaping of tobacco, cannabis, or hemp-derived products is banned in indoor areas open to the public, specifically the following:

  • Public meeting places
  • Public vehicles
  • Indoor places of employment

UMB will be updating its Non-Smoking Policy to reflect the addition of vaping as a prohibited activity in campus buildings in 2025. Thank you for your attention to and compliance with these regulations.
