August is Civic Health Month

Did you know that 80% of health outcomes are determined beyond clinical walls?

Nurses advocate for their patients every day. It is just as important for nurses to advocate for their values at the local, state, and federal level. Provision 9.2 of the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses states: “Individual civic engagement and nursing’s civic professionalism embody nursing’s covenant and affirm the mutual expectations and responsibilities between nursing and society.”

The Office of Strategic Engagement and Impact invites you to learn more about why civic health matters for nurses. Join us at the following times to check your voter registration status and get involved!

  • Tuesday, Aug. 26, 1 - 2 p.m., Building I Lobby (Universities at Shady Grove)
  • Thursday, Aug. 28, noon - 1 p.m., UMSON Lobby (Baltimore)

Check out the work that these organizations are doing to increase civic engagement for nurses:

Vo+er develops nonpartisan civic engagement tools and programs for every corner of the health care system. Their work is driven by a community of health care professionals, organizers, clinical students, and technologists united by a common vision: healthy communities powered by inclusive democracy.

Healing Politics is an educational, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization on a mission to inspire, motivate, recruit, and train nurses and midwives to run for elected office up and down the ballot while building a culture of civic engagement within the professions.

Nurses Shift Change is a national call to action uniting nurses to reclaim the soul of the profession through advocacy, humanity, and collective power. Rooted in the principles of humanity, ethics, science, and social justice, they mobilize nurses to lead beyond the bedside, confront systemic injustice, and shape a future where equity and compassion guide health care for all. Through initiatives like the Report for Duty Rally, they activate the voice of nursing to protect our communities, uplift our colleagues, and demand transformative change in health and society.
