Women in Science volunteer at Meals on Wheels

Maybe you’ve heard of Meals on Wheels. Maybe you’ve seen the trucks delivering meals. Maybe you know someone who receives meals. Did you know that the UMB Women in Medicine and Science (WIMS) organization had its inaugural service event at Meals on Wheels on March 29, 2025?

A dedicated group of eight volunteers from Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases, Hematology/Oncology, the Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, Epidemiology & Public Health, and Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine donned their aprons and hairnets and spent a couple of hours on a Saturday volunteering at Meals on Wheels. In just two hours, they packed 858 meals and overcame some technical difficulties!

Meals on Wheels goes far beyond food delivery to enrich the lives of seniors in Central Maryland. Volunteer opportunities include meal preparation, packing, delivery, grocery shopping, and other support to Baltimore seniors. The organization even has a program called Kibble Connection — a partnership with Maryland SPCA — to deliver pet food so animal companions can remain at home with their owners.
