Through shared stories, we deepen our understanding of one another, reminding us of the shared humanity and life experiences that shape every generation. As we learn from and support older adults in our communities, we strengthen generational bonds and build a culture of empathy, respect, and lifelong growth.

In recognition of International Day of Older Persons on Oct. 1, the Peter Lamy Center on Drug Therapy and Aging and the Geriatrics and Gerontology Education and Research (GGEAR) program invite the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) community to an Age-Friendly University event. This event will feature a special film screening of "Aging in America: Survive or Thrive," followed by a guided discussion focused on what it means to age in today’s America. This thought-provoking film, sponsored by the John A. Hartford Foundation, speaks on the resilience, identity, and sense of purpose that define the aging experience, while also shedding a light on the daily systemic challenges faced by older adults. The film highlights key topics including ageism, financial insecurity, health care, Alzheimer’s disease, nursing homes, and longevity, offering a comprehensive look at the diverse issues shaping the aging experience in America.

This event is presented in collaboration with the University of Maryland Academy of Lifelong Learning and the University of Maryland Older Americans Independence Center. Together, these groups aim to help people connect across generations and gain a deeper understanding of the shared experience of aging.

After the film, we encourage attendees to stay for a guided conversation on how we can help every generation thrive, not just survive. The evening will also provide two opportunities to share creativity and gratitude:

  • A writing competition inviting participants to share just six words reflecting on older adults, aging, community, and purpose.
  • A Veteran Flower Writing Campaign, asking participants to write notes in honor of and to uplift veterans in our community.

We hope that you will join us for an evening of insight, compassion, and connection as we celebrate both the lives and stories of older adults within our community.
