At the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), our core values are more than words on a page. These values — Respect and Integrity, Well-Being and Sustainability, Equity and Justice, and Innovation and Discovery — shape our culture, guide our choices, and define how we treat one another.

This winter, we are focusing on UMB’s core value of Well-Being and Sustainability — the value that reminds us that we care about the welfare of our people, planet, communities, and University.

Together, we’ll take time to reflect on what well-being really means and how we can create a more sustainable future for ourselves, our colleagues, our students, and our shared environment.

Throughout January, weekly “values-in-action” challenges invite us all to practice what we have discussed and bring Well-Being and Sustainability to life across campus.

This week’s “values-in-action” challenge (Well-Being and Sustainability Questions 5 and 6): You can be a catalyst for others valuing Well-Being and Sustainability through your actions:

  • Consider the impact of gratitude on well-being. What is one action you can take this week to cultivate a greater sense of gratitude in your daily life?
  • Think about how rest and recovery fuel sustainable performance. What boundary or habit can you set this week (Jan. 5-11) to protect your energy and focus?

Share your reflections and see how others across UMB are thinking about this value: Join the conversation here.
