Core Values Tree Graphic

At the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), our core values are more than words on a page. These values — Respect and Integrity, Well-Being and Sustainability, Equity and Justice, and Innovation and Discovery — shape our culture, guide our choices, and define how we treat one another.

This winter, we are focusing on UMB’s core value of Well-Being and Sustainability — the value that reminds us that we care about the welfare of our people, planet, communities, and University.

Together, we’ll take time to reflect on what well-being really means and how we can create a more sustainable future for ourselves, our colleagues, our students, and our shared environment.

Throughout November and December, new reflection questions will be posted every other week to spark conversation around this value. Then, starting in January, weekly “values-in-action” challenges will invite us all to practice what we have discussed and bring Well-Being and Sustainability to life across campus.

This week’s reflection question (Well-Being and Sustainability Question 2):

How do you define sustainability in your personal or professional life? What helps you maintain balance over time rather than just getting through the moment?
