The Maryland NASW Chapter will host a full-day training on Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (login available from 8:50 to 9 a.m.), led by #UMSSW Gisele Ferretto, MSW, LCSW-C, clinical instructor.

This session will explore the complexities of making mandated reports of maltreatment and harm while maintaining the therapeutic relationship. Ferretto will address the legal, ethical, and therapeutic challenges that arise when reporting suspected child maltreatment, including current Maryland law, licensing regulations, and the NASW Code of Ethics. The training will also cover the nuanced issue of reporting when an adult discloses childhood maltreatment.

Key topics include:

  • Defining child maltreatment, vulnerable adults, and harm

  • Applying professional values, ethics, and statutes in mandated reporting

  • Understanding reporting requirements, including cases involving adults

  • Identifying Maryland statutes and regulations governing social work practice

  • Evaluating ethical decision-making in challenging reporting situations

Ethics content will reference:

  • COMAR 10.42.03

  • Health Occupations § 19-311(14)

  • NASW Code of Ethics (2021) 1.01, 1.02, and 1.03

This training is essential for social workers seeking to strengthen their understanding of mandated reporting requirements while upholding ethical and therapeutic standards. We encourage all practitioners to attend and enhance their practice in this critical area.
