The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance Policy establishes principles, guidelines, and a framework to guide the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) in its engagement, utilization, and governance of AI.
AI is revolutionizing the way we study, teach, research, and work, and promises to enhance student learning, improve research outcomes, and foster innovation at UMB. Like any emerging and rapidly evolving technology, AI adoption comes with unique risks and challenges. The policy aligns with UMB’s mission to improve the human condition and serve the public good and supports the University’s core values and relevant institutional policies. It further adheres to Maryland state laws, including Md. Code Ann., State Fin. & Proc., §§ 3.5-801-806, and the latest version of the Department of Information Technology’s Guidance for the Responsible Use of Commercial Generative Artificial Intelligence Tools.
