President Jarrell addresses a group of fellows in the President's Symposium and White Paper Fellowship

Application Deadline Extended

The deadline for the President's Symposium and White Paper Fellowship has been extended to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2025. If you're interested and eligible for the program, you can apply here. All UMB students are eligible to apply.

What is the President's Symposium and White Paper Fellowship?

Each year, students from across the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) have the opportunity to shape the future of the University.

As part of the President’s Symposium and White Paper Project, an interdisciplinary group of students (known as President’s Fellows) is selected to participate in a mentored fellowship while researching, developing, and writing recommendations surrounding an issue that impacts the UMB community. UMB students from all disciplines are encouraged to submit an application.

For the 2025-26 academic year, the fellows will explore the topics of civic engagement and civic leadership, and answer the following question: What is the role, responsibility, and obligation of UMB, as an institution that educates graduate and professional students, in providing structured curricular and co-curricular learning opportunities for students to nurture them into civic-minded citizens and leaders equipped to engage responsibly with and participate in the democratic process at the local, state, and federal levels? In particular, students will explore how UMB can provide a leading example in offering civic education at the graduate level.

If you have questions about the program, email Sam Anderson, assistant director for student leadership and engagement in UMB Student Affairs, at samuel.anderson@umaryland.edu.
