April 30: Thursz Plenary Lecture: ‘Just Research: Promises and Pitfalls’ (Research Day)
April 03, 2025Thursz Plenary Lecture: “Just Research” as Ethical Professional Practice
Wednesday, April 30
5-6:30 p.m. (In person)
UMSSW Auditorium
This plenary session will engage with the underlying motivations and obligations to conduct just research as a public university that serves the community and trains future professionals. Our professional codes of ethics require us to consider equity, service, and well-being of those we serve. We ask how does our research facilitate and impede our ability to carry out these obligations and how can we ensure that as a research community we reflect and learn with and from our colleagues, students, alumni, and our communities? This panel aims to place individuals from diverse perspectives and roles in dialogue to engage with questions of social justice in research. Panel discussion will be shaped by questions from symposium participants that can be submitted upon registration and from themes explored in the panel sessions.
Objectives:
- Engage with the underlying motivations and obligations to conduct just research as a public university that serves the community and trains future professionals.
- Consider the equity and well-being of those we work with.
- Question how our research facilitates and impedes our ability to carry out these obligations.
- Reflect and learn with and from our colleagues, students, alumni, and communities.
