Core Values Tree Graphic

Welcome to the Core Values Conversation!

At the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), our core values help shape how we learn, collaborate, lead, and serve. They are more than words — they influence how we approach challenges, support one another, and contribute to improving the human condition.

From now through the end of July, we will be highlighting UMB’s core value of Innovation and Discovery — We imagine and explore new and improved ways to accomplish our mission through education, research, clinical care, and service. This value represents our commitment to curiosity, creativity, continuous learning, and advancing new ideas in service of our communities and the public good.

Innovation and Discovery are not limited to research or technology. They can be found in everyday problem-solving, new ways of connecting with others, creative approaches to teaching and learning, and the willingness to ask questions, rethink assumptions, and try something different.

Throughout the coming weeks, new reflection questions will be posted every other Monday to encourage conversation and shared learning across the UMB community. In July 2026, weekly challenges will invite us all to put Innovation and Discovery into practice in meaningful and accessible ways.

This week’s reflection question (Question 3): What is one challenge facing our campus, city, or society that could be improved through greater collaboration across roles, disciplines, or perspectives?

We invite students, staff, faculty, and community members to share their reflections and learn from one another’s experiences and perspectives.

Join the conversation.
