This seminar will explore the rapidly evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) across the research process, including tools for literature searching, identifying research gaps, research design, analysis, and scientific writing. We will also consider ethical and integrity concerns associated with AI use and distinguish genuinely new challenges from longstanding problems in research that AI may amplify.

This session will emphasize a practical approach to responsible AI use — thinking first, engaging AI, critically interrogating its output, revising it, and taking responsibility for the final work. We will conclude with examples of emerging applications in Institutional Review Board review and briefly discuss the implications of AI for educating and training future researchers.

Speaker: Henry Silverman, MD, MA, HEC-C, professor of medicine, certified bioethicist, University of Maryland School of Medicine
