The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) will host its 2027 Annual Student Policy Summit on March 15 - 16, 2027. This two-day conference offers baccalaureate and graduate nursing students an immersive experience in the federal policy and advocacy process in the Washington, D.C., area. Due to the summit's popularity, this year's conference will take place in Rosslyn, Virginia. Registration for the 2027 summit is limited to students who have not previously attended.

Learn More About the Summit

The summit experience includes workshops led by policy and advocacy experts, didactic sessions focused on nursing's role in professional advocacy, and visits with legislators on Capitol Hill. Participants will learn how to communicate effectively with members of Congress and their staff about key issues related to nursing education, research, and health policy. Expenses associated with attending the summit, including registration, travel, lodging, and meals, will be covered by the Office of the Dean, in accordance with applicable university policies and reimbursement guidelines.

To apply, please submit a one-page essay addressing three key points:

  • why you are interested in health care policy and advocacy.
  • why it is important for nurses to be involved in policy and advocacy.
  • how you plan to integrate health policy and advocacy activities into your future nursing career.

Your essay must be submitted as a Microsoft Word document, single-spaced, using 12-point font and 1-inch margins. It must also include a header with your name, UMSON campus location, and academic program.

Please email your essay to Imani Payne, Office of the Dean, at ipayne@umaryland.edu by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday Nov. 22.

Essays will be reviewed by a selection committee, and selected applicants will be notified by the end of the day on Dec. 11.
