CARTI Fall ‘Writing Your First R01 Grant’ Class: Register by Sept. 21

The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Center for Advanced Research Training and Innovation (CARTI) is offering an interactive “Writing Your First R01 Grant” class this fall. Eighty-five percent of participants in last year’s cohort submitted a grant application within one year of participating in the program. Participants are expected to submit a grant application within six months of completing the program.

Interested faculty should contact the instructor, Dr. Christy Chang at cchang@som.umaryland.edu as soon as possible. The registration deadline is Sept. 21.

“Writing Your First R01 Grant”

Time: Wednesdays, 9 to 11a.m.
Dates: Oct. 7 to Dec. 16, 2026

This class is intended for early-stage faculty (assistant professors) who are beginning to write their first National Institutes of Health R01 (or equivalent) grants and intend to submit in February or June 2027.

The class size is small, with a maximum of eight to 10 participants. Please note that participants must have:

  • a well-formulated project that is suitable for a R01 (or equivalent),
  • drafts of their specific aims and significance sections ready to begin preparing their application,
  • sufficient preliminary data for a competitive first R01 (or equivalent),
  • a track record that is considered by their department/division chair to be ready for their first R01 (or equivalent).

The topics that will be covered:

  • Planning your first R01 and writing specific aims
  • Writing significance and innovation sections
  • Creating a budget and writing budget justification
  • Writing the approach section (including issues related to vigor and reproducibility)
  • Preparing a biosketch

Class will meet over Zoom every Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m., starting Oct. 7. This gives the principal investigators about six weeks to get feedback from co-investigators, revise, and submit.
