The University of Maryland School of Social Work (UMSSW) has a longstanding history training and developing social workers in the area of children and family services through academic offerings, fellowship programs, and agency partnerships. As UMSSW embarks on its 65th anniversary, we will highlight and celebrate our rich history and legacy, bringing together social work research, practice, and policy to strengthen communities and improve lives locally, nationally, and globally.
Expanding Our Reach Through Partnership
Through community and agency partnerships, UMSSW provides students, practicing social workers, and other professionals interdisciplinary opportunities to expand their knowledge, experience, and network. UMSSW collaborates with local, national and international agencies, and organizations like International Social Service, USA (ISS-USA) to provide practicum placements and conference opportunities.
As the U.S. member of the International Social Service network, ISS-USA provides cross-border case management, international child welfare services, family tracing and reunification, home studies, and technical assistance for professionals serving children and families across borders.
“ISS-USA has enjoyed a longstanding and productive partnership with the UMSSW. We have collaborated on conferences dating back to 2008 and have served as a practicum site for the school for more than 20 years, hosting numerous MSW students in their practicum placements,” said Elaine Weisman, senior development and training manager, ISS-USA.
Over the years, ISS-USA staff have also contributed guest lectures to UMSSW courses, engaged with student organizations, and collaborated with faculty on topics related to international social work, migration, child welfare and cross-border practice.
Learning and Networking Opportunities for UMB Students, Faculty, and Alumni
ISS-USA is celebrating its 100th anniversary and hosting a half-day symposium at the SMC Campus Center on the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) campus Oct. 9 from 1-4:30 pm. CEUs are available for registered participants.
“The ISS-USA conference highlights the critical role of social work education in preparing a cross-border workforce while strengthening connections among practitioners, educators, and students. This goal closely aligns with UMSSW’s commitment to advancing social work practice and workforce development,” said Lynn Murphy Michalopolus, director of global initiatives, UMSSW.
In addition to UMSSW’s collaboration with ISS-USA to connect and support children, adults, and families, UMSSW also builds professional capacity across child and family serving systems through the Ruth Young Social Impact Institute’s Child Welfare Academy, the Child Welfare Fellowship Program, and the Montgomery County Child Welfare Fellowship.
