Congratulations to UMSON's Inaugural Core Values Award Recipients
June 30, 2026
Congratulations to UMSON's inaugural staff and faculty Core Values Awards recipients, honored at The Gathering on June 29.
The Core Values Awards recognize and celebrate UMSON employees who exemplify the University’s Core Values — Respect and Integrity, Well-Being and Sustainability, Equity and Justice, and Innovation and Discovery — in their daily work and interactions. This award honors an individual whose actions and attitudes not only reflect these values but also inspire a culture of excellence, inclusion, and continuous improvement across the UMSON community.
Staff Award
Jean Gambo, MSN, RN, simulation training specialist (left)
From the nomination: Well-Being and Sustainability: "Jean stands out as she is well-being personified. She talks about and participates in self-care and I believe that her own self-care contributes to how she shows up to work. Everyday, she approaches work with positivity, enthusiasm and joy. She extends that joy by contributing to and in several instances leading efforts in creating a culture of well-being at USG. A few examples are the tie-dye event to kick off the new school year, she co-founded a walking/running group, and coordinating our holiday parties."
Faculty Award
Nicole E. Smith, PhD, MS '14, RN, CNE, CHSE, CNE-cl, assistant professor and co-director of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program (right)
From the nomination: Respect and Integrity: "This individual consistently demonstrates an unwavering commitment to ethical behavior, transparency, and compassion in every interaction. Nicole values others by being responsive and approachable, ensuring that questions are answered promptly and thoroughly. She goes above and beyond by providing critical information, even things I didn’t realize I needed to know, showing foresight and a genuine desire to support others. Her collaborative spirit fosters trust and teamwork, and her professionalism sets a standard for excellence. What truly stands out is her kindness and empathy. Whether assisting with complex issues or offering guidance, she does so with patience and respect, creating an environment where everyone feels valued. Her willingness to help, combined with her integrity and accountability, makes Nicole an indispensable resource and a role model for the nursing program. Through her actions, Nicole embodies the principles of Respect and Integrity, making a positive impact on colleagues and the workplace as a whole.”
