This session will provide an overview of how National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grant applications are assigned, reviewed, and scored. We will discuss considerations for early-stage investigators, review criteria, and how funding decisions are made. Attendees will learn about the role of an NIH reviewer, how to find review opportunities such as the Early Career Reviewer Program, and the typical workload and time commitment involved. The session will also highlight the professional benefits of serving as a reviewer, including stronger grantsmanship, deeper insight into the review process, exposure to emerging research, and expanded professional networks.
