Secure Research Environment (SRE)

Launched in 2023, the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Secure Research Environment (SRE) is a controlled, cloud-based computing platform that enables research teams to work safely with sensitive and restricted data. Researchers and their collaborators have access to a range of analytical tools and other software. View available SRE software.

The SRE also supports specialized software, high-performance computing, graphics processing units, and artificial intelligence workloads.

The SRE is available to all research projects that involve sensitive data and, in most cases, is free for researchers to use. More than 700 people currently rely on the SRE to support their research.

The SRE team partners directly with each research team to assess its data, governance, access, storage, software, collaboration, and computing needs, and then configures a secure workspace tailored to the project.
