How do you feel? In fall 2026, Ian Kleckner, PhD, MPH, associate professor, will take PhD and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students on a deep dive into answering this complex question.

NELC 600: Symptom Science for Clinicians and Researchers focuses on the science of how people experience symptoms, how to measure symptoms and their biological correlates, and how people perceive, prevent, and treat symptoms in a clinical setting.

For clinicians, this course will improve clinical practice by providing a greater understanding of symptoms themselves and treatment options targeting various mechanisms.

For researchers, this course will provide a foundation for organizing how to think about symptoms from different perspectives spanning biochemistry, neuroscience, psychology, and sociology and will highlight gaps in knowledge that can be addressed through future research.

The new course will meet every Wednesday, 7 - 9 p.m. on Zoom.

This course is offered through a collaboration with the University of Maryland School of Nursing’s SYNAPSE Center.
