January 07, 2026
Please join the UMB Institute for Clinical & Translational Research (ICTR) in welcoming Joan G. Carpenter, PhD, CRNP, ACHPN, FGSA, FPCN, FAAN, associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, who will present “Strengthening Palliative Care in Nursing Homes: Insights from a Community-Engaged Research Partnership.”
Discussion synopsis: The UMB ICTR Community Engaged Research (CEnR) Partnership Development Voucher Program supported the development of an academic community partnership to study palliative care in Maryland nursing homes. Beginning in early 2024, the project established a Community Advisory Board and designed and implemented the Palliative Care Knowledge and Practice Survey with staff in five nursing homes. Over 100 staff responses revealed strong interest in palliative care leadership and training and highlighted critical gaps and opportunities for improvement. These findings informed the preparation of a national presentation, a grant application, and a forthcoming manuscript. Our ultimate goal is to improve access to high-quality, person-centered care for individuals living with serious illness.
