Introducing UMB Connect
April 22, 2026
The Evolution of UMB Transportation
Beginning in January 2027, the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) will launch a new transportation program — called UMB Connect — that is designed to enhance how students and employees move on and around campus.
What Is UMB Connect?
UMB Connect is a multi-modal transportation service designed to get you where you’re going on time. Riders have options: They can request trips between designated locations on and around campus or use the UMB Shuttle to get to popular destinations around Baltimore.
UMB Connect includes:
- Safe Ride (new name coming soon!)
- Available from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. every day
- Safe Walk (new name coming soon!)
- Available on campus 24/7/365
- Modified UMB Shuttle service
Providing Faster, More Reliable Service
Over the past few years, the UMB Transportation Committee has evaluated rider data, reviewed transportation costs, and considered our community’s feedback to develop our new-and-improved UMB Connect program.
UMB Shuttle changes:
In January 2027, the number of UMB Shuttle routes will be reduced from three to two, with the Mount Vernon route being discontinued. (Several MTA routes and the free Charm City Circulator provide easy, alternate transportation to that area.)
On remaining routes, unused stops will be consolidated, decreasing transit times. Technology enhancements will provide better shuttle tracking.
A monthly shuttle pass for employees will be available in fall 2026.
MTA “Semester Pass”:
Students can purchase the new MTA “semester pass” at a discounted rate.
Safe Ride improvements:
UMB students and employees can request rides on and near campus through a new mobile app (coming soon).
- Designated pickup locations: Nearly 20 clearly marked pickup spots will be located across campus. Select the spot closest to your location and meet your driver there. No more circling the block. No more confused phone calls.
- Service upgrades:
- UMB Police and Public Safety will add two additional vans, at least one of which will be ADA accessible. That means four vans will be running at once!
- Students and employees will swipe their UMB OneCard to track usage. A customer rating system will allow our team to make adjustments in real time.
- Dedicated UMB security officers are behind the wheel, so you can ride with confidence.
Next Steps
UMB Connect reflects a shift toward quick, efficient, customer-centered transportation. Look for a dedicated website in the coming months with more details, including app access, pickup locations, and much more. We look forward to supporting our community with transportation that’s safe, dependable, and built around your needs.
