Julia Scott

UMSSW’s Julia Scott, assistant director of engagement and programming, will serve as a panelist for "The Wire & Beyond: Countering Anti-Black Narratives," a community conversation examining how media narratives shape perceptions of Baltimore, Black political leadership, and Black-led grassroots organizations.

Part II of the "The Wire and Beyond: Countering Anti-Black Narratives" series will explore the ways portrayals of “corruption,” addiction, and crime can reinforce racialized assumptions about a majority-Black city. Drawing on insights from S. Rasheem’s documentary "Beyond the Wire," the discussion will consider how "The Wire" shaped a widely consumed narrative about Baltimore — and how Black community knowledge, political power, and visions for self-determination offer vital counternarratives.

The conversation will also examine how allegations of corruption can be used to challenge or delegitimize Black political leaders and Black-led organizations, as well as how these narratives influence current public conversations about power, governance, and accountability in Baltimore.

Date: Thursday, Oct. 15
Time: 6-7:30 p.m.
Location: Enoch Pratt Free Library, Central Library, Baltimore
