June is National Safety Month, an annual campaign led by the National Safety Council to raise awareness about leading safety and health risks and promote safe behaviors at work and at home. UMB Environmental Health and Safety is excited to support and celebrate National Safety Month by sharing resources and tips to help keep our campus community safe. This week’s focus is preventing slips, trips, and falls in the workplace.

Follow these tips to help reduce the risk of slips, trips, and falls.

If you are working in indoor spaces:

  • Keep floors clean, dry, and free of clutter
  • Clean up spills promptly using appropriate methods
  • Keep walkways clear of cords, boxes, and loose materials
  • Ensure flooring is in good condition and free of uneven surfaces
  • Maintain adequate lighting so hazards are easy to see

If you are moving throughout the workplace:

  • Wear appropriate footwear with good traction
  • Pay attention to posted safety signs, especially in wet or uneven areas
  • Stay alert to your surroundings and avoid distractions while walking

If you are using equipment or completing tasks at height:

  • Use ladders or step stools safely; never stand on chairs or unstable objects
  • Inspect equipment before use to ensure it is in good condition
  • Take your time and maintain three points of contact when climbing

By maintaining good housekeeping practices, staying aware of your surroundings, and using equipment properly, we can significantly reduce the risk of slips, trips, and falls. National Safety Month is a reminder that small actions can prevent serious injuries. Let’s work together to keep our workplace safe for everyone!
