Lauren Schuyler, assistant research director of the Family Welfare Research and Training Group at the University of Maryland School of Social Work, is featured in a recent Moneywise article examining changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and their potential impact on families.

Schuyler shared concerns about increased poverty and food insecurity as families lose access to benefits. She also highlighted how losing SNAP can affect children’s automatic eligibility for the National School Lunch Program, creating additional barriers to accessing school meals.

“Increased poverty is a real concern with these changes,” Schuyler told Moneywise.

The article explores expanded work requirements, changes to parental exemptions, and growing financial pressures on states, with perspectives from researchers and food assistance leaders on the consequences for communities.
