The Medical Alumni Association (MAA) and University of Maryland School of Medicine’s (UMSOM) Department of Family and Community Medicine is hosting the 32nd Philip A. Mackowiak, MD, Historical Clinicopathological Conference from 1:30-3 p.m. May 1 in MSTF Leadership Hall.
Historical figures whose illnesses and/or deaths have not been satisfactorily explained are subjects for the annual conference, which was developed in 1995 by Philip A. Mackowiak, MD ’70, MBA, then-professor of medicine and vice chair of the Department of Medicine who is now Professor Emeritus. Since his retirement in 2025, the conference is being administered by Richard Colgan, MD, Professor Emeritus and the MAA Carolyn Frenkil and Selvin Passen Scholar-in-Residence.
This year’s subject is American poet Emily Dickinson, who died at age 55 of unknown causes. The event will feature a clinical presentation by Stephen G. Reich, MD, the Frederick Henry Prince Distinguished Professor in Neurology at UMSOM. Jane Wald, the Jane and Robert Keiter Family executive director of the Emily Dickinson Museum, will give the historical presentation.
The event is part of the MAA’s 151st reunion weekend taking place May 1-2.
