June is National Safety Month, an annual campaign led by the National Safety Council to raise awareness about leading safety and health risks and promote safe behaviors at work and at home. This week’s focus is “Staying Safe on the Roads.”

Whether you’re walking, driving, or riding across campus, follow these tips to help keep yourself and others safe:

If you are walking on campus:

  • Use sidewalks whenever possible.
  • Obey traffic signs and signals.
  • Cross only at crosswalks or intersections.
  • If no sidewalk is available, walk facing traffic.
  • Stay alert to vehicles and construction-related detours.
  • Be mindful of community members using mobility aids.
  • Use UMB Police Safe Walk/Safe Ride if you feel unsafe.

If you drive on campus:

  • Follow posted speed limits.
  • Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
  • Use extra caution in low-visibility conditions.
  • Be especially careful when backing up.

If you bicycle or use a scooter:

  • Wear a certified helmet.
  • Keep both hands on the handlebars.
  • Stay focused and scan your surroundings.

By staying aware and making safe choices — whether walking, driving, or riding — we all contribute to a safer campus community. National Safety Month is a reminder that small actions can have a big impact. Let’s look out for one another and make safety part of our everyday routine.
