New School of Social Work Building Recognized for Design Excellence
October 07, 2026
The University of Maryland School of Social Work’s future home is earning recognition before its doors open. A recent Hoodline article highlights the building’s Excellence in Design Award from AIA Maryland in the Unbuilt Architecture — Commissioned category. Designed by Ballinger, the new facility is scheduled to welcome students in fall 2027.
Under construction at North Greene and West Lexington streets in downtown Baltimore, the six-story building will bring together school programs currently housed across four locations. Its design reflects input from students, faculty, and staff, with spaces intended to foster learning, collaboration, and community connection.
Planned features include a bright atrium, welcoming gathering areas, street-level access to community services, and an elevated outdoor space for events. Sustainability measures—including geo-exchange heating and cooling, rooftop solar panels, and a stormwater runoff recycling system—support the project’s environmental goals.
The recognition marks an important milestone for a new home designed to reflect the school’s mission and strengthen its connection to Baltimore.
