Liberty Tree Dedication

Sunday, Oct. 11
1-2 p.m.
Old St. Paul's Cemetery, 733 W. Redwood St., Baltimore

The Friends of Old St. Paul's Cemetery with the Society of the War of 1812 in Maryland, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United States Daughters of 1812, and the Maryland Liberty Tree Project, will host the dedication of a tulip poplar descended from Maryland's Liberty Tree and a commemorative marker during the 250th year of American independence.

The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m., and the tree and marker will be unveiled at approximately 1:25 p.m.

Why It Matters

Samuel Chase, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court; Col. John Eager Howard, who led the Maryland Line at Cowpens and later served as governor; and Lt. Col. George Armistead, who commanded Fort McHenry through the bombardment of Sept. 13-14, 1814, are buried at Old St. Paul's. The tree is descended from the Annapolis Liberty Tree, under which the Sons of Liberty gathered before the Revolution — the last of the original Liberty Trees standing anywhere in the country until it was lost in 1999. Baltimore named the tulip poplar its official city tree in September.
