Oct. 27: ‘The Divided State of Education: What Does Educational Equity Really Require?’
October 12, 2026
Live Webinar — "The Divided State of Education: What Does Educational Equity Really Require?"
More than 70 years after Brown v. Board of Education declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional, schools remain deeply divided by race and class — and equitable educational opportunities remain out of reach for many students.
In her recent essay, “In Fighting for Every Black Child, Did I Betray My Own?,” Nikole Hannah-Jones revisits her decision a decade ago to enroll her daughter in an under-resourced, high-poverty public school in Brooklyn, despite having the resources to choose otherwise. Her reflection raises difficult questions about the tension between our commitment to equity and the choices we make for the children we love.
Join us for a panel discussion that moves beyond whether Hannah-Jones made the “right” decision to ask a broader question: What does educational equity really require of us?
Together, we will explore race, class, school integration, parental choice, and structural inequality — and consider how social workers can help challenge an educational system in which opportunity remains unevenly distributed.
