"Beyond Weight Loss: The Expanding World of GLP-1 Medications"

Oct. 6 | 11 a.m. to noon

Register for this episode of "Virtual Face to Face with President Bruce Jarrell."

GLP-1 medications have become one of the most talked-about developments in medicine — but the story is becoming much bigger than weight loss.

Originally developed to help manage type 2 diabetes, GLP-1 medications are now being used or studied across an expanding range of health conditions. Research has found cardiovascular and kidney benefits in certain patients, while newer studies and approvals are exploring their role in conditions such as sleep apnea and metabolic liver disease.

In this episode, UMB President Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS, puts the GLP-1 phenomenon into perspective. How do these medications work in the body? Why do they appear to have effects beyond blood sugar and weight? What does the research actually tell us — and what questions remain?

The conversation also explores the potential risks and limitations of GLP-1 medications, including side effects, long-term use, and loss of muscle mass.
