Grant Writing Group

The University of Maryland School of Medicine Center for Advanced Research Training & Innovation (CARTI) is offering an interactive K/CDA grant writing class this fall. Of the participants from last year’s cohort, 85 percent submitted a grant application within a year of participation.

We invite senior fellows and faculty who are preparing federal or private career development grants. Participants are expected to submit a grant application within six months of participation. See details below:

Career Development Award (K/CDA) Grant Writing Class

TIME: Wednesdays, 9-11 a.m.

DATES: Sept. 9-Nov. 18, 2026

LOCATION: Hybrid (Five virtual and Five in MSTF 318)

INSTRUCTOR: Marey Shriver, PhD, executive director of faculty development, CARTI

This class is intended for senior fellows and early-stage faculty who are beginning to write a federal or private career development award (K/CDA). Participants may be preparing a proposal for an NIH K mechanism (K01, K08, K23, K25), VA career development award, or career development grants from a foundation or professional society. Participants are expected to submit a grant application within six months of participation. Participants should have a well-formed idea and identified mentors so that they are prepared to start drafting components of their application. Class will meet over Zoom or in person every Wednesday from 9-11 a.m., starting on Sept. 9. The class size is small, with a maximum of 10 participants. Participants will be selected based on the conceptual development of their research question and completeness of their proposed mentoring team.

Please note: Participants must have approval from their department chair, including confirmation of required protected time designated by the career development award (i.e., 75 percent protected time for research in an NIH K application).
