The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy’s (UMSOP) first HiPitch Competition challenged students to turn complex research into compelling, three-minute pitches focused on real-world health care impact. Bringing together finalists from across the region, the event emphasized clear communication and connecting innovation to purpose, scalability, and value.

Top honors went to Jeremie Piña for a concept exploring how to prevent cleft lip and palate before birth, while Athanasios Chamzas, a PhD student in pharmaceutical sciences at UMSOP, earned second place for his work on precision dosing. Together, the pitches underscored a key idea: Scientific breakthroughs matter most when they’re communicated clearly enough to inspire action.
