Hongbing Wang Named UMB Distinguished University Professor

Hongbing Wang, PhD, professor and interim chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (PSC) at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, was named a University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Distinguished University Professor, the highest appointment bestowed on a faculty member at UMB.
Wang is an internationally recognized leader in drug metabolism, xenobiotic receptors, and drug-induced liver injury whose research has advanced understanding of how the liver processes medications and responds to toxicity. His discoveries involving nuclear receptor proteins, including CAR, PXR, and AhR, have informed drug safety, precision medicine, and cancer treatment approaches, including findings that improved the effectiveness and safety of chemotherapy for patients with lymphoma and triple-negative breast cancer. In addition to publishing more than 120 peer-reviewed articles and earning continuous NIH and FDA support, Wang is a dedicated educator, mentor, and academic leader who has trained students and fellows now serving in leadership roles across academia, government, and industry.
