The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development has announced that applications are open for a limited time for the Homeowner Assistance Fund WholeHome Critical Home Repairs grant program.

The program will provide more than $3.5 million in grants to homeowners, including eligible University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Live Near Your Work (LNYW) grant participants, to address critical health and safety issues in their homes that could result in displacement.

The WholeHome Critical Home Repairs grant program will provide eligible homeowners with grants of up to $10,000 for critical home repairs such as roof repair or replacement, repair of nonfunctioning heating or cooling systems, electrical or plumbing repairs, or mold or mildew remediation. To be eligible for funding, applicants must be a Maryland homeowner whose income is at or below 150 percent of county area median income. Full eligibility criteria and application requirements are available on the department’s website.

Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications opened Jan. 22 and will close when funds have been exhausted.

UMB’s LNYW program, a homebuying assistance benefit for University employees, contributes $16,000 per eligible participant toward the down payment and closing costs of homes in select West Baltimore neighborhoods. Baltimore City contributes an additional $2,500 for a total of $18,500 toward a home purchase down payment through the LNYW program.
