April 6: ‘The Rules Based Order Is Dead: Long Live the Power Based Order’
March 25, 2026
The University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law welcomes Tahir Amin, LLB, Dip. LP, founder and CEO of the Initiative for Medicines, Access & Knowledge, on April 6 as part of the UMB Human Rights and Global Health Lecture Series.
Based on his forthcoming book, "Pharma Monopoly," Amin's talk, "The Rules Based Order Is Dead: Long Live the Power Based Order," will recount the pre-history that set the stage for the creation of the World Trade Organization — a history that often suffers from a historical thinking in policy and legal circles and which continues to help perpetuate the ruse of a rules-based order. It is a story of how the political economic ideology of neoliberalism repackaged capitalism and progress in the language of "free-market competition," "innovation," and "markets" to counter the aspirations of decolonization by newly independent nations and a New International Economic Order movement that in the 1970s sought to prioritize social and economic justice as the central theme of development.
Register for the in-person event, which will be held from 4-6 p.m. April 6.
