UMB Reads! is excited to welcome the community to our summer virtual kickoff as we launch our next shared read: "The People Equation: Why Innovation is People, not Products" by Deborah Perry Piscione and David Crawley.

This engaging and practical book challenges a common misconception about innovation: that it begins with technology or products. Instead, the authors argue that lasting innovation starts with people — their ideas, relationships, courage, and capacity to grow together. At a time when generative artificial intelligence is reshaping how we work and imagine the future, this message is especially timely. Tools may evolve, but meaningful innovation remains deeply human.

As we focus on UMB’s core value set of Innovation and Discovery, we’ll explore how each of us can help create a culture where psychological safety is expected, thoughtful risk-taking is encouraged, and collaboration is strengthened across our community.

The virtual kickoff is designed as an interactive space to:

  • Explore the key themes of the book
  • Connect with colleagues across UMB
  • Reflect on how people-centered innovation supports our mission
  • Learn how to participate in UMB Reads! throughout the summer

No reading is required to join the kickoff — just bring your curiosity and willingness to engage in conversation.

Whether you’re new to UMB Reads! or a returning participant, this is a wonderful opportunity to connect, reflect, and begin a shared summer journey of learning together.
